How to make engaging videos for a print magazine

April 2019 saw the relaunch of The Face magazine after a 15 year hiatus and the cultural trailblazer dived straight back into the mix. Third Channel director Marcus McSweeney was a natural choice to help The Face curate a space for fun, passion and enthusiasm, in their new online video venture. Creating video idents for The Face with some of the most adventurous artists on the music landscape Dua Lipa, Rosalia, Headie One, Jimothy Lacoste, Yoshi and Charlie XCX. We find out what they keep under their beds.

Marcus set out to make highly stylised interview films for their Volume. 4 Issue. 1 magazine (first issue post-relaunch). Creating something more than just your average talking-head video. Shot on Super 16 by Director of Photography Jaime Ackroyd, the texture of the old style film adds a bit of nostalgia to the new breeds of celebrity.

Featuring relevant new artists Dua Lipa, Rosalia, Headie One, Jimothy Lacoste, Yoshi and Charlie XCX, the films announce the arrival of The Face into today’s video-mad landscape.

Not just another throwaway piece of content, the films asked the big questions as well as light hearted ones. What is Pop music in 2019? Do you ever dream of living in a non-digital world? And what advice would you give to your younger selves? Giving nuance and insight into the minds of creatives.

This is the second time Marcus has helped launch the film and video output of a youth forward magazine, having worked with VICE in 2007 to launch their platform VBS with Spike Jones and later their branded agency Virtue.
